Revitalisation of the Wiese river in the city of Basel (WieseVital)

Michel Kuhlmann, Dila Demiral Yüzügüllü, 17. September 2024

The revitalisation of the upper reaches of the Wiese river in the canton of Basel-Stadt is currently planned. TK CONSULT AG was commissioned by the canton to validate the river hydraulics for the project by the application of numerical modelling.

Overview of the project perimeter with examples of the 2D model.

The revitalisation includes a widening of the riverbed between Zollfreistrasse and Freiburgersteg, with nine areas being designed as ramps. Further large-scale widenings are planned above the Freiburgersteg, below the Zollfreistrasse and next to the Eisernersteg.

A numerical 2D discharge model was used to simulate the flow conditions and potential flooding areas during peak discharge events. In addition to the simulation of the relevant flood discharges (HQ30, HQ100, HQ300 and EHQ), sensitivity analyses were also carried out on the roughness coefficient. These included a comparison with physical model experiments and an investigation of the effects of different types of vegetation on the flow conditions.

Based on these simulation results, optimisations were developed and the functionality of the planned measures was verified.

Further details regarding the revitalisation project can be found on WieseVital.
