Thermal use of surface water

Steffen Corbe, 13. März 2018

Thermal modelling can show how warmed or cooled water spreads and mixes in rivers and lakes.

The use of sea and river water makes sense due to the large thermal energy potential for heating and cooling. Especially with regard to the Energy Strategy 2050, the thermal utilization of waters can make an important contribution.

Cold deep water can be used in the summer for cooling, while the relatively warm water in winter can be used for heating purposes. Nevertheless, the limnological effects of the returned water use must be quantified by modelling. Appropriate numeric calculations can proof how well and how quickly the heated or cooled water spreads in the body of water. It is checked that the legal requirements are met.

TK CONSULT AG has been preparing limnological reports for decades and carries out stratification calculations. Depending on the project-specific question and cantonal requirements, 1-dimensional or 3-dimensional procedures can be carried out.

Such a study was recently done at the river Aare.
